Trust Yourself!
Dr. Davis remembers very clearly a day in his life fifteen years ago when the subject matter of this technique, a certain quotation by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, seemed to be the most important words in the world. This was the message Davis needed to hear at the time, and he knew it. Everything that had occurred to him previously for decades was explained by the Goethe quotation. Everything that would happen to him in the future would be positively affected by the words now emblazoned on his mind. Davis spent an entire cold, foggy day climbing a rocky, wooded trail from the base of Mt. Pisgah in western North Carolina to the top. As he climbed Goethe's words sank deeper and deeper into his consciousness. By the time he finally came out on the Blue Ridge Parkway a short distance from the visitor's center at the top of the mountain, Davis felt he could do anything.
This technique provides an inspiring quotation which can be used to help you become a more calm, effective, and happy person. Most people will find the technique works instantly the moment they read it and apply it to a life situation.
Trust Yourself!
What will you gain from this technique? Nothing except the most extraordinary calm. Well, there are other benefits too like increased effectiveness in everything you do, displaying grace under pressure, achieving the elusive quality known as happiness. You will learn what I believe to be one of the most important lessons of life: to trust yourself.
For years one of my favorite quotations has been the following words by Goethe: "As soon as you trust yourself, you will know how to live." I believe this one sentence contains the solution to just about every problem we have.
The moment we begin to doubt ourselves we become dysfunctional. People who doubt they can lose weight, can't. People who doubt they can quit smoking, can't. People who do not trust themselves to do the right thing, don't. But the moment we trust ourselves in an area, something magical happens. We become skillful in that area, whether we really deserve to be or not.
The process:
1. Write down the Goethe quotation and post it in a prominent spot where you will see it frequently.
2. Reflect on the Goethe quotation. Prove this quotation to yourself in your mind, through your reflection. Accept the quotation as an ultimate truth.
3. Understand and appreciate the practical uses of Goethe's words. For instance, the next time you find that you are doubting yourself in a particular area say the words “Trust Yourself!” If you take these words to heart, you will feel a sudden calm sweep over you and you will likely see a sudden improvement in your performance.
Prove it by actually doing it. When you find yourself worrying or doubting, say “Trust Yourself!” and take immediate action. You will find that the moment you decide to do something and take action, a miracle occurs. Your negative state is broken, replaced with a positive one. By trusting yourself for just one moment you become strong.
4. Rejoice in your new-found power! You have proved that Trust Yourself! works. Use this technique as needed to restore power, energy, and decisiveness.
Note: I believe the words “trust yourself” contain a fundamental truth that we all should remember. Observe people you meet who are having problems or who are living in chaos. Ask, “Do they trust themselves?” Invariably you will see that they do not. In the areas in which they are experiencing difficulty they decidedly do not trust themselves. Is it possible to learn to trust yourself simply by making it a point to or by doing the above exercise? It is worth a lot to you to prove that it is.
