Act Like Satchel Paige
Here's something a little wacky to do that just might be what you need to handle that special area where you don't seem to be performing as well you you might. Dr. Davis began experimenting with this technique in Asheville, North Carolina in the early 1990s. He saw it work magically with a six year-old boy as he regained strength and climbed to the top of Mt. Pisgah in the Smokie Mountains of North Carolina. Davis suggested to the pooped out youngster that he act like Chicken Man, a strange creature who had strong chicken legs but was otherwise a person. Chicken Man could walk and climb like crazy on those strong legs, and never tire out. The boy quickly grasped the concept and began acting like Chicken Man. New found energy carried the six year-old to the top of the mountain before the rest of the group.
The technique is called Act Like Satchel Paige. But if energy and speed are what you need, you can always act like Chicken Man!
Act Like Satchel Paige
As a youngster I have memories of Satchel Paige playing baseball in the major leagues as a 50 year-old. No one could be sure how old he really was. In fact, Satchel Paige came to be viewed by many as ageless and timeless. He was quite mysterious, almost super human.
I don't profess to be an expert on Satchel Paige, but the idea he embodies in my mind may prove as useful to you as it has been to me. I see Satchel Paige as a slow moving, easy-going champion athlete who effortlessly glided through life. Quiet confidence. Almost magical ability. Ageless, timeless, Boundless.
Satchel Paige, or anyone else you can imagine, can serve as a model for how to perform in special life situations. Every child looks to his parents as role models, to learn how to live. The sad fact is many children do not have quality role models so even as adults they are not sure how to live and act. The easiest thing in the world is to emulate another person. If you select someone with quality traits, traits you wish to posses, you can do it by simply acting like them.
Here's what to do:
1. Determine a person with quality traits you would like to possess.
2. Observe this person in action, either by reading about them, watching them on TV or the movies, or in person.
3. Isolate the traits you wish to possess. Ready smile. Graceful social interactions. Instant decision making. Quiet confidence. What do they do that you would like to do?
4. Practice acting like your model. In my case, I can easily see Satchel Paige gliding through life. Laughing. Moving slow and effortlessly. Smiling a lot. I can act like this! For a few minutes, or even a few hours, I can act like Satchel Paige. And I feel great when I do. His quiet confidence become my quiet confidence. Just as he was a champion in what he did, I see and feel myself a champion in what I do. Amazing, instantly, my performance is elevated.
Enjoy the process. Appreciate the good that comes from your experiments and downplay any negative thoughts that may occur. Just because you act like Satchel Paige does not mean that you will be able to throw a baseball through a brick wall. It does mean that you should elevate your performance and enjoyment in whatever you do significantly. Do that and you've done something.
5. Use the technique in real life situations. Make the process pay or work for you somehow. Try it!
End
Note: Just yesterday, August 5, 2008, I used this technique. It was a hot, awful day on the golf course. I was bogeying every hole and felt like I had forgotten how to play. Coming down the 10th fairway I decided to turn the game over to Ben Hogan. I imagined an aging Hogan coming out of retirement, just a little rusty, but otherwise still a commanding presence on the golf course. Hogan played my ball the rest of the way. Let's see how he did. Ben got 6 pars and 3 bogies on the back nine, a huge improvement. If it hadn't been so hot, I believe he would have gotten all pars and maybe a birdie or two!

"It's funny what a few no-hitters do for a body."
"One time I snuck a ball on with me and when I went to winding up, I threw one of them balls to first and one to second. I was so smooth I picked off both runners and fanned the batter without that ump or the other team even knowing it."
"The only change is that baseball has turned Paige from a second class citizen to a second class immortal."
"There never was a man on earth who pitched as much as me. But the more I pitched, the stronger my arm would get."
"I never threw an illegal pitch. The trouble is, once in a while I would toss one that ain't never been seen by this generation."

"Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you."
"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?"
"Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching."
"You win a few, you lose a few. Some get rained out. But you got to dress for all of them."
"Mother always told me, if you tell a lie, always rehearse it. If it don't sound good to you, it won't sound good to no one else."
